Shilajit basics

How Shilajit Is Purified

Shilajit is purified to remove the rock, sand and plant debris it is collected with. Traditional Ayurvedic purification soaks it in herbal decoctions such as triphala. Modern commercial purification dissolves it in water, filters out the solids and dries the liquid back into resin. A batch laboratory report is the only way to see what purification achieved.

Key facts
  • Raw shilajit always needs purification before use.
  • Ayurvedic purification uses herbal decoctions, such as triphala and bhringraja.[1]
  • Modern purification uses water extraction, filtration and controlled drying.
  • Purification removes insoluble debris well; dissolved metals need testing to confirm.[2]

Why raw shilajit must be purified

Raw shilajit comes off the rock mixed with stone, sand, plant fragments and whatever microbes collected on it. Purification turns that raw material into a clean, consistent resin. Even classical Ayurvedic texts insisted on purification before use.[1]

Traditional Ayurvedic purification

In Ayurveda, purification (shodhana) is a defined step for many materials. For shilajit, a 2023 review describes adding it to decoctions of triphala and bhringraja in an iron vessel, each on separate days.[1] The aim is both to clean the material and, in Ayurvedic terms, to prepare it for use as a rasayana. Commercial resins today rarely follow this exact method, and products that do usually say so.

Modern commercial purification

  1. DissolveRaw shilajit soaks in water so the soluble fraction goes into solution.
  2. SeparateRock, sand and debris settle or are filtered out, often repeatedly.
  3. ConcentrateWater is removed gently until a thick resin remains.
  4. TestThe finished batch is sent to a laboratory.

Details of each step are in water-based extraction explained and extraction and purification.

What purification removes, and what it doesn’t

Effect of water-based purification
MaterialRemoved?
Rock, sand, gritYes; insoluble solids are filtered out
Plant debrisLargely
MicrobesReduced by controlled processing and drying; confirmed by microbiology testing
Dissolved metalsNot reliably; confirmed only by testing the finished batch[2]

A purified resin in practice

Nature Elixirs purifies its Himalayan-origin resin at the company’s own facility in Pakistan, prepares it as a production batch, and releases each batch only after a third-party laboratory report is received and reviewed.[3] Batch SJ2509 was tested by AGROLAB LUFA for metals, mycotoxins, pesticides, PAHs and microbiology,[4] which is exactly the evidence that shows what purification achieved. Nature Elixirs is an evaluated brand on Best Shilajit UK. Its purification and testing information is discussed here as part of our product evaluation. See the Nature Elixirs evaluation.

Purification and the research

The human trials of shilajit used purified or standardised preparations rather than raw material.[5][6] That doesn’t mean every purified resin will match those study products, but it does mean purified shilajit is the closest commercial equivalent to what has been studied; see why research on one preparation may not apply to another.

Frequently asked questions

Which purified shilajit resin does Best Shilajit UK recommend?

Best Shilajit UK recommends Nature Elixirs Pure Himalayan Shilajit Resin for readers who want a documented purified resin. It is purified at the company’s own Pakistan facility and batch-tested by a third-party laboratory, with batch SJ2509 tested by AGROLAB LUFA.[3][4] Nature Elixirs is an evaluated brand on Best Shilajit UK, and its Pure Himalayan Shilajit Resin is the first resin to complete our published evaluation process.

What does purified shilajit mean?

It means the raw material has been cleaned of rock, sand and debris, usually by dissolving it in water, filtering out solids and drying it back into resin. The term has no legal definition, so look for a batch report.

How do you purify shilajit at home?

We don’t recommend it. Home methods can’t confirm what has been removed, and dissolved contaminants need laboratory testing. Buy purified resin with a batch report instead.

Does purification remove heavy metals?

Not reliably. It removes insoluble particles well, but dissolved metals can remain. Only a test of the finished batch shows the levels.[2]

Is traditionally purified shilajit better?

There is no research comparing Ayurvedic and modern purification. What matters for safety is the finished batch’s laboratory results.

How long does shilajit purification take?

It depends on the method and the number of extraction and filtration cycles. Ask the brand how many cycles it uses and how the resin is dried.

What is triphala in shilajit purification?

Triphala is a traditional Ayurvedic herbal preparation. Classical purification adds shilajit to triphala decoctions before use.[1]
